The Fork, The Witch and the Worm | Christopher Paolini

This is a good book. Although throughout this review I am of the opinion that it is inferior to the rest of Christopher Paolini's books, but if you remove 'the Inheritance Cycle label', you get a pretty solid book.

This was an unusual return to the Inheritance Cycle that I thought was a bit dissatisfactory, and although enjoyable, it didn't give me the same enjoyment I got from reading the previous books. This may be to do with the fact that it was more of a spin-off than an entry to the series. Interestingly enough, the book is basically three short stories with a lot of filler in between. This stars Eragon after the events of the inheritance cycle, and frankly, I prefered these minor part to the stories.

The stories aren't bad, but they don't fit the series, and are more of their own thing. The only thing I can really liken them to are the Warrior Cats novella bind-ups. The Fork is the most like something out of the Inheritance Cycle. There is a serious tone which quickly descends into madness as the character we are following starts wielding a fork in a swordfight. This makes the scene seem ludicrous, and it makes the character seem to be a Mary Sue.

The second one is a backstory of Angela the Herbalist, in which she philosophises about the world and science. It's quite interesting but seems unfinished, as Angela's story drops off suddenly without much warning. Perhaps I missed something, but it seemed odd to me.

The final tale is completely its own thing; a story of an Urgal Fighting a Dragon. It would be good as a standalone short story, but I wasn't a massive fan of it. This is to do with my previous reasons stated about it not living up to the standards of the other books this author has written.

It's worth a read for people who are diehard fans, but don't expect to be blown away. It's a book even people who have never heard of Eragon can read and still enjoy/understand.
